ABOUT THIS ITEM

Description

This listing is for 3x 2kg kits (6kg total) of Epoxy Laminating Resin Kit Clear.

This is an ELR 70 Epoxy Laminating Resin and HS70 Slow Hardener kit, providing outstanding transparency and clarity (crystal clear) with excellent wet-out properties, outstanding adhesion, high strength, and low shrinkage. This high-performance resin is used extensively in marine, turbine, and aerospace applications, ensuring super-reliable and predictable results. It is exclusively made in the UK.

  • Mix Ratio: 100:30 (resin to hardener by weight)
  • Pot-life: 70-90 minutes (indicative, depends on many factors)
  • Glass Transition Temperature (Tg): 80°C (with full cure cycle slowly climbing to 70°C)

Each purchase includes:

  • 1x Free Sheer Mixing Stick
  • 1x Laminated Technical Data Sheet
  • 1x Laminated Resin Mixing Ratio Chart

The Safety Data Sheet for LR70 is available upon request.

Application:
Add the hardener to the resin, ideally in a polypropylene mixing bucket. Accuracy is crucial: measure your resin and hardener by weight using electronic scales.

Mix well with a shear mixing stick, ensuring to scrape the sides of your mixing bucket. Minimum mixing time should be 2 minutes.

Cure times can be accelerated by cure temperature. Changing the ratio will result in (at best) a failed partial cure.

For best results, post cure in the mould without releasing your part from the mould first. This assumes your mould and release agent are rated for the same thermal rating as your resin. For instance, a compatible mould-making kit is safe to use up to 80° C, as is LR70.

Storage:
The resin and hardener have a usable minimum shelf life of 12 months provided they are stored between 10°C and 28°C, in a dry place, unopened and in their original containers. Over this time, the hardener may gradually darken, but it is still perfectly usable. Over time, the resin may crystallise slightly; the gentle application of a small amount of heat (on a batch by batch basis) will restore the resin to its original state.

Ambient Cure and Pot Life:
Many factors are involved in ambient cure time; testing is recommended to find a process that suits your equipment, part, mould, layup, etc. All times listed herein are indicative only.

Usable pot-life also depends on many factors, a major one being increasing bulk which results in an increased exothermic temperature rise caused by the reaction. Avoid keeping a large quantity of the mixture standing in one compact mass (e.g., in a mixing beaker or similar bulk container).

HS70 (Slow) Hardener Performance (Indicative Only):

  • Ambient Cure (25°C): Demoulding Time (72 hours), Pot Life (70-90 minutes for 100ml), Full Cure (3-5 days)

Post (Accelerated) Cure Time:
Post curing at elevated temperature is always advisable for room temperature curing resins to stabilize the component and to achieve the best possible mechanical properties. An elevated temperature post-cure is required for parts subjected to higher temperatures during operation. Users should evaluate the best conditions for curing or post-curing depending on component size and shape.

For best results, conduct the post cure in the mould without prior release (ensure mould and release agent are compatible with the post cure temperature).

Ovens vary for their ramp time; your ramp time should never be faster than 1°C/minute. Always cure your part at a higher final temperature than the Glass Transition Temperature (TG) your part will be operating at. Two cure profiles are provided:

HS70 Hardener - Intermediate Performance Cure Cycle:

  • 24 hours at 25°C: 24 hours elapsed
  • 2 hours at 35°C: 26 hours elapsed
  • 16 hours at 50°C: 42 hours elapsed

HS70 Hardener - Maximum Performance Cure Cycle (Maximum recommended temperature: 80°C):

  • 24 hours at 25°C: 24 hours elapsed
  • 2 hours at 40°C: 26 hours elapsed
  • 5 hours at 80°C: 31 hours elapsed

Handling Precautions:
HS70 Hardener: This material is corrosive. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes. If contact with eyes occurs, flush thoroughly with water (eyelids held open) and seek immediate medical attention. If skin or clothing comes in contact with the hardener, wash the affected skin area thoroughly with soap and warm water, and remove/wash contaminated clothing before re-use.
