This solid, un-molested ammonite has been polished over its entire surface, revealing fabulous detail and an iridescent ammolite surface. The surface has a wonderful opalised appearance with iridescent rainbow flashes.
Ammonites make beautiful display pieces and are highly sought after. They are one of the most recognisable fossils due to their familiar spiral-shaped shell. These marine animals were present between 240 and 65 million years ago, possessing a coiled external shell similar to the modern nautilus. Although they resembled nautiluses, these molluscs are more closely related to living coleoids such as octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. Ammonites varied greatly in size, ranging from only a few millimetres to some fossils measuring a huge 2.5 meters.
